About Adult Chamber Festival

October 26, 2024.

Manchester Community Music School, Manchester, NH

The NH Chapter of ASTA is sponsoring a one day Chamber Festival for adult string players. The purpose of this event is to give adult amateur string players the opportunity to experience playing in a chamber music group. The festival is designed with three groups/levels. Group 1 is a string orchestra and the music level is for less experienced players.  Level 2 is a string quartet for more experienced players.  Level 3 is for intermediate/advanced players who are looking for a more challenging experience.  Rehearsals will begin at 9 a.m., lunch will be provided, and we will have an informal concert beginning at 3 p.m.  Due to the number of cellists that participated last year, we are expecting to again offer a cello ensemble for intermediate-advanced players. Depending on this year's response we will add string quartets as needed.  All questions should be sent to Sally Wituszynski:  swituszynski@comcast.net

The cost for the event is $50.  Checks should be made out to NHASTA and mailed to Ben Greene, 127 South St. Concord NH.  Registration deadline is August 1st.

The string orchestra will be coached by Muriel Orcutt, and one piece they will work on is the Sibelius “Impromptu,” Opus 5 no. 6.  https://youtu.be/3x0r69SuW0Y?si=D8xHjUVWTMiLjFVE

The intermediate string quartet will be coached by Sarah Hoag, and they will work on Mozart’s string quartet K. 157, which is in the public domain and may be printed from this website: https://imslp.org/wiki/String_Quartet_No.4_in_C_major,_K.157_(Mozart,_Wolfgang_Amadeus)

The more advanced string quartet will be coached by Margaret Hopkins, and they will work on the “Lyric Quartet” by William Grant Still. https://youtu.be/UYlSFd9bHgY?si=TUGCFt7pFSCvhqhn

Please listen to/look at the music examples to decide which level to sign up for. We will also have a cello ensemble for mixed levels, coached by Sam Smith. They will work on the Goltermann “Romance,” and “Star of the County Down.” If we have participants for more than one string quartet at any level, we will add additional coaches as needed, and the repertoire studied will be different but at a similar level.

Registration is open now, and will close on August 1. Music that is not in the public domain will be purchased and sent to the participants in August, along with specific group information. All questions should be sent to Sally Wituszynski: swituszynski@comcast.net
